Bergsson was confirmed in office unopposed at Saturday’s general assembly.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers defender, who won 80 caps for Iceland, was first elected in February 2017. He took the helm just after Iceland’s outstanding run to the UEFA EURO 2016 quarter-finals in their first major tournament. This was followed in 2018 by participation in the FIFA World Cup finals, before Iceland narrowly missed out on a place at UEFA EURO 2020, losing to Hungary in the playoffs.
“We can be proud of Icelandic football and the work that is being done,” Bergsson said. “This is an industry that stands for much of the best parts of our society.“
“It´s an honour to be given the mandate to lead the association and take part in the continuing strengthening of Icelandic football,” he added.
